HEADING INTO BLACK
A Valeyard Introspection Fanmix

Fandom: Doctor Who

Subject: The Valeyard

Warning: Spoilers if you don't know who the Valeyard is.

Basic Idea: So, the Valeyard is an entity cryptically described as the personification of all that is evil within the Doctor, who was brought forth as his prosecuter in the "Trial of a Time Lord" arc. Now, this guy apparently came about between the Doctor's twelth and final incarnations. The Valeyard, personality wise, is apparently a hardcore manipulator, and he's willing to do anything to ensure his own existence, even if it means getting his past self executed in the process. The major difference between the Doctor and the Valeyard is that the Valeyard doesn't stop pulling the strings.

Since we're currently on the Doctor's eleventh incarnation in the series, I've been thinking about how this guy may make his appearance in the new series, and how everybody else may react to this change (you know, the "Children of Time" and all of the Doctor's other allies).

This mix is based on the theory that the Valeyard is basically the Doctor gone bad (or at least the Doctor losing his moral compass completely), and it somewhat follows his downward spiral.

Notes: Pictures are all from the wonderful Michael Jayson fansite. Tracks are available individually and in a .zip at the bottom.

Black Sheep - Metric
Hello again, friend of a friend, I knew you when
Our common goal was waiting for the world to end
Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend
You crack the whip, shapeshifting trick, the past again

I'll send you my love on a wire
Lift you up, everytime, everyone, ooo, pulls away, ooo
From you

Got balls of steel, got an automobile, for a minimum wage
Got real estate, I'm buying it all up in outerspace
Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend
You crack the whip, shapeshifting trick, the past again

Time Is All Around - Regina Spektor
Everybody wants to say that you have changed
Of course you've changed, you've changed, you've changed
Your mind's been rearranged

But leaves become most beautiful
When they're about to die
When they're about to fall from trees
When they're about to dry up
Start A War - The National
We expected something
Something better than before
We expected something more

Do you really think you can just put it in a safe behind a painting
Lock it up and...leave?

Walk away now and you're gonna start a war

Photobucket

Paint it, Black - The Rolling Stones
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it's heading into black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

Exercise One - Joy Division
When you're looking at life,
In a strange new room,
Maybe drowning soon,
Is this the start of it all?
Turn on your TV
Turn down your pulse
Turn away from it all
It's all getting too much.

When you're looking at life
Deciphering scars,
Just who fooled who
Sit still in their cars,
The lights look bright,
When you reach outside
Time for one last ride
Before the end of it all.

Power - Kanye West ft. Dwele
I'm living in that 21st century doin' something mean to it
Do it better then anybody you ever seen do it
Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it
I guess every superhero need his theme music

No one man should have all that power
The clocks tickin' I just count the hours
Stop trippin' I'm trippin off the power
...
I just needed time alone, with my own thoughts
Got treasures in my mind but couldn't open up my own vault
My child-like creativity, purity and honesty
is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts

Reality is catching up with me, taking my inner child I'm fighting for custody
With these responsibilities that they entrust in me
As I look down at my diamond and crush the piece
Thinkin

No one man should have all that power
The clocks tickin' I just count the hours

For What It's Worth - Placebo
Broke up the family
Everybody cried
For what it's worth
I have a slow disease
That sucked me dry
For what it's worth
Come on walk with me
Into the rising tide
For what it's worth
Filled a cavity
Your god shaped hole tonight
For what's it's worth

Down In It - Nine Inch Nails
Kinda like a cloud I was up way up in the sky and I was feeling some feelings
You wouldn't believe sometimes I don't believe them myself and I decided I was never coming down
Just then a tiny little dot caught my eye it was just about too small to see
But I watched it way too long and that dot was pulling me down

I was up above it
Now I'm down in it

Well shut up, so what what does it matter now
I was swimming in the haze now I crawl on the ground
and everything I never liked about you is kind of seeping into me
Try to laugh about it now but isn't it funny how everything works out
("I guess the jokes on me" she said)

I was up above it
Now I'm down in it

I used to be so big and strong
I used to know my right from wrong
I used to never be afraid
I used to be somebody
I used to have something inside
Now just this hole that's open wide
I used to want it all
I used to be somebody

I'll cross my heart and hope to die but the needle's already in my eye
and all the world's weight is on my back and I don't even know why
and what I used to think was me is just a fading memory
I looked him right in the eye and said "goodbye"

An interesting concept I hadn't really considered. Thanks for the mix and the idea--it's something for all of us to think about!
